A hidden yard is transformed into a home and office, through the complete renovation of an existing warehouse and the insertion of an architectural pod with a distinctive ribbon-shaped roof.
- Bethnal Green, London, UK
This infill site was a former industrial yard, containing a brick warehouse, which had been derelict for years. The proposal consists of carefully restoring the historical building and converting it into a home. A new architectural element is inserted into the yard with a distinctive ribbon-shaped roof, clad in black rubber, to serve as a commercial unit.
The architectural strategy aims to contrast old and new structures, through materials and forms. A series of planted courtyards are created unexpectedly across the site. The first courtyard is shared between the commercial and residential units in order to promote social interactions.
