vPPR has designed a new house and studio for an artist, featuring a distinctive blue roof and integrated artworks by the artist.
Project
Team
Located on the most Westerly point of Europe, on the coast of Ireland, the project transforms an existing bungalow and garage into a spacious house and artist studio, framing uninterrupted views of the Atlantic.
Site Plan
The two buildings adopt the modest volumes and pitched roofs of the former structures on the site. The distinctive blue roofs are in dialogue with the vast skies and ocean in front. A colourful tiled column by the porch announces arrival and gives clues to the playful materiality of the house. The windows of the former bungalow are infilled with colourful tiled artworks by the client artist that embed the historic outlook of the property in its new façade.
Inside, the house is arranged along a corridor, bookended with windows. The living areas are located to the front of the house with large ocean-facing views, while the back of house is positioned to the rear of the corridor, and shifted to create a sheltered entrance porch at one end and a projecting bathroom at the other end. The living dining room is located in the middle of the house, with the guest bedrooms and the master bedroom on either side. Doorways are aligned with windows to maximise transparency through the building.
The project was designed in collaboration with the artist, and the shifted geometries in plan were inspired by their artworks.
